Outpatient Imaging Services

If we are unable to come to your practice, an outpatient ultrasound can be arranged at Schrag Animal Clinic. Outpatient imaging is performed on Tuesday mornings from 9 am-12 pm.

Referral Form:

Please completely fill out the outpatient ultrasound referral form below. Send this form along with bloodwork and the electronic medical record to ovdirecords@gmail.com. Please put Outpatient Ultrasound Request and the Patient Name in the subject line. Don't forget to include your practice's and owner's contact information. Our referral coordinator Alyssa Preston will reach out to you and/or your client to schedule an appointment.

Drop-off Appointment:
Patients will need to be dropped off at Schrag Animal Clinic at 7:30 am on Tuesday mornings.

Fasting and Sedation:

Patients need to be fasted for 12 hours before check-in. Diabetic patients, small patients, or young puppies can have a shorter duration of fasting if hypoglycemia is a concern. If a meal needs to be given prior to ultrasound, a small meal of wet food/gruel would be best. Try to avoid kibble. Patients can have water.

Sedation is needed for most of our ultrasounds in order to facilitate patient comfort, positioning, and to obtain the best images. We like to follow the fear free approach and recommend a combination of trazodone and gabapentin for managing patient anxiety. Please determine the correct dosage for your patient based on its species, weight, and response to the medication. A dose can also be given the night before and again the morning of the appointment to prepare for the visit. Many times with this protocol additional sedation is not needed for the ultrasound.

Notifications:
You and your client will receive confirmation and reminders by text and email.
You will also receive an email with details about:

  • cancellation policy
  • fasting and sedation information
  • pricing details
  • location
  • how to check in when you arrive
  • what to expect during the appointment

Follow-up:
Referring veterinarians and owners will be sent a copy of the ultrasound report shortly after the appointment. All follow-up care is managed by the referring veterinarian. We recommended scheduling a follow-up recheck appointment to discuss the results of the ultrasound with your client.

If you have any concerns or questions, please reach out to our referral coordinator Alyssa Preston or one of our other team members!
